Andy Murray is drawing inspiration from Miami Heat’s 25-game winning run ahead of his second-round match against Bernard Tomic at the Sony Open on Saturday.

The British No1 is based in Miami for around three months of the year and is a keen follower of the NBA champions, who are nine wins short of breaking a 31-year record set by the LA Lakers.

Murray can make his own bit of history and move to world number two if he wins the Miami Masters title – and the 25-year-old hopes watching the Heat extend their streak will inspire him over the next week.

“I watch a lot of basketball,” Murray said on Thursday. “It is a sport I really like. But I never played it when I was growing up, and I am terrible at it.

“I will hopefully go to the game if I can. I went to see a couple of Miami Heat games before Indian Wells, when they were playing at home. The streak has been unbelievable.”

Murray will look to bounce back from the disappointment of a three-set loss to Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells last week.

And the US Open winner hopes that being based locally will aid his bid to win the title ahead of his second-round meeting with Australia’s up-and-coming star Tomic.

“I spend three or four months a year here, and it’s nice to go back after a match and not have to stay in a hotel,” he said.

He added: “Bernard’s one of the top guys coming through,” Murray said. “He started off the year very well, winning his first title and reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.

“He’s not unbelievably quick, but he has very good anticipation, so he also looks as if he has a lot of time – that’s why he will be difficult to play against.”
