Andy Murray hails ‘incredible match’ after winning Valencia Open

Andy Murray closes in on a place at the ATP World Tour Finals by winning the Valencia Open

Andy Murray reflected on an “incredible” final after saving five match points against Tommy Robredo to win the Valencia Open.

The 27-year-old, who also beat the Spaniard in last month’s Shenzhen Open final, triumphed 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (10-8) to boost his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals next month.

“I know it was an incredible match,” Murray said, who moves up to fifth in the Race to London, with ninth good enough to qualify.

“The tennis at the end and in the second set was high level. I played well at the right moments.

“I don’t know how I managed to come through it – I was very tired, Tommy was very tired as well.

“When you have to work hard for something it means more, you get more satisfaction from it.

“I kept fighting and it stands me in good stead for the end of this year and the beginning of next.”

The Scot later added on his Facebook page: “What a night! Tommy is a great guy and and played a great match, I’m just so pleased that I was able to win through.

“Heading to the airport shortly so I can get to Paris for some much needed rest before my first match next week. Thanks for your support as always. #ValenciaOpen500 #tennis”
