Andy Murray will play at the US Open without a coach after one of the most satisfying tournament victories of his career to date.

The world No4 successfully defended his Rogers Cup crown in Toronto on Sunday with a straight sets victory over Roger Federer and in doing so, became only the fifth player to defeat both Federer and Rafael Nadal in the same competition.

His achievement was all the more remarkable considering Murray toiled against the world’s best without a coach.

“I felt pretty free on the court this week,” said Murray. “I was going for my shots and had a game plan that I stuck to and when I wasn’t in tough positions I kept going for my shots.”

“I felt a lot more comfortable – I didn’t feel I was on the defensive to much. You have to do that sometimes when you’re playing against probably the two best tennis players of all time.”

The Scot decided to part ways with long-term coach Miles Maclagan last month but since the split the 23-year-old reached the final of the Farmers Cup in Los Angeles and enjoyed an outstanding week in Toronto.

Murray is set to play at the Cincinnati Masters this week but the Scot says he will continue without a coach for the immediate future.

“I said at the start that I would like to have a coach, I think most players would like to have a coach,” the 23-year-old continued.

“But I want to have the right person working with me and have the structure and set-up I would like. I’m not going to rush into anything.

He added: “I’m sure after the US Open I will look hard at the type of person I would like to work with. But I can’t see myself making any changes before the US Open.”
