Arsenal

Lukasz Fabianski The Pole could have reacted quicker to Jenkinson’s poor header which led to Azpilicueta’s goal. Could do little to deny Mata in the second half. 4

Carl Jenkinson Poor header to Fabianksi allowed Chelsea’s full-back Azpilicueta to break the deadlock. While he ran the touchline religiously, never really offered any threat going forward. 4

Laurent Koscielny Wasn’t at fault for either of Chelsea’s goals and made a vital clearance to deny Eto’o his first League Cup goal midway through the second half. 6

Thomas Vermaelen Restored to the Arsenal backline, the Belgian was powerless to prevent the opener. Out of position for Mata’s second. Lucky to avoid a red card in the dying moments of the game for a cynical tug on Ba’s shirt. 5

Nacho Monreal Had Arsenal’s best first-half chance but dragged his shot narrowly wide. Regularly offered an option marauding the left-wing from his defensive position. Will provide competition for Kieran Gibbs. 6

Jack Wilshere Was purposeful throughout as he came up against Chelsea’s experienced duo of Essien and Mikel. However, the England star couldn’t quite conjure the decisive pass or telling shot on goal. 7

Aaron Ramsey Energetic but struggled to hit his Premier League heights. Had a goal-bound shot deflected wide early in the second half before being withdrawn with Saturday’s Liverpool clash in mind. 6

Ryo Miyaichi The Japanese youngster was quiet and looked decidedly lightweight against Chelsea’s experienced back four. 5

Tomas Rosicky Not the Czech’s most memorable night in an Arsenal shirt as Chelsea’s midfield overpowered their opponents, including Rosicky. 6.

Santi Cazorla Showed glimpses of what he can produce but still getting back to full fitness. Had a few tame efforts which were blocked or gathered in by Schwarzer. Dragged a late chance narrowly wide. 5

Nicklas Bendtner Unconvincing. Arsene Wenger placed his faith in the Dane but the confident striker failed to get into gear against the Blues. Bizarrely squandered a chance to shoot when clean through in the 54th minute. 3

Substitutes

Mesut Ozil Introduced with almost 30 minutes remaining, but the German couldn’t turn the tie around. 5

Olivier Giroud Almost had an immediate impact as he drew a reaction save from Schwarzer. 6

Mark Schwarzer Was alert when called into action. Got a slight hand to Monreal’s first-half effort, whilst denying substitute Giroud. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta Took a gamble to close down Jenkinson and it paid off as the defender’s lacklustre header allowed the Spaniard to score. Almost gifted his compatriot Monreal an equaliser moments after. 7

Gary Cahill Looked solid alongside Luiz. Growing into an established – and dependable – Chelsea centre-half. 7

David Luiz Handed a chance to impress after some haphardous displays. Didn’t put a foot wrong alongside his composed team-mate. 7

Ryan Bertrand Deputising for Ashley Cole, Bertrand managed to handle the combine threat of Cazorla and Jenkinson down his right wing. 6

Michael Essien By far the most experienced midfielder on show and used all his know-how to Chelsea’s gain. However, the Ghanaian’s shooting was nothing short of atrocious. 7

John Obi Mikel Committed a couple of trademark fouls which helped disrupt Arsenal’s flow. Did the ugly things well at The Emirates. 7

Kevin De Bruyne Looked to impress Mourinho, who has been critical of the Belgian in recent weeks. Did well until he was replaced by Ramires. 7

Juan Mata (Man of the match) Tireless runner for the away side as he tried to impress Jose Mourinho. Got his reward in the 65th minute when he guided a superb strike past Fabianski. 8

Willian Looked a threat on the right wing and conjured some cutting passes for his team-mates. Still finding his feet in the Chelsea side, though. 7

Samuel Eto’o Difficult to fault the veteran striker’s effort. He was always willing to run the channels and offer an option for his team-mates. Denied by Koscielny in the second half. 6

Substitutes

Ramires Provided fresh legs to close down a rallying Arsenal. 5.
