Arsene Wenger backed his Arsenal side to string together a series of positive results after they were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United.

The Gunners missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as the Red Devils left Emirates Stadium with a point to leave Wenger’s side second in the table.

It was important not to lose tonight and from now on we must win our games again

“It is important now to recover physically and prepare for the next game,” said Wenger.

“We want to stay in the FA Cup and have a good opportunity to do it at home. I’m confident we’ll have a great game on Sunday [against Liverpool].

“The title race is absolutely open for many teams now. But we have had two difficult games – Liverpool away, Man United at home – and I’m sure we’ll start again now.

“It was important not to lose tonight and from now on we must win our games again.”

Robin van Persie forced a brilliant save from Wojciech Szczesny late on, while David De Gea denied Santi Cazorla at the other end.

And Wenger felt that both teams could have snatched a dramatic late win in the second half in north London.

“Overall, we could have won it. It was a game of very few chances,” he continued.

“Our defensive focus was extreme as we conceded so many goals on Saturday. They were as well focused on defending well. In the end, either side could have won 1-0.

“Manchester United are a good team with great players, so when you go forward they can always catch you with the quality of the strikers they have.”
