Arsene Wenger felt his Arsenal side should have settled for a draw after Robert Lewandowski’s late goal handed Borussia Dortmund victory and threw Champions League Group F wide open.

The visitors started the brighter of the two sides in north London and took the lead in the 16th minute through Henrikh Mkhitaryan after Aaron Ramsey was caught in possession on the edge of the box.

Wenger’s men worked their way back into the game and Olivier Giroud slammed home an equaliser from Bacary Sagna’s cross just before half-time.

But the visitors had the final say in north London as Lewandowski finished off a sweeping counter-attack in the 82nd minute to leave Dortmund, Napoli and Arsenal all on six points in Group F.

“It’s difficult to take,” said Wenger. “Maybe we weren’t at our most fluent best going forward but at the moment we were on top we lost the game because we wanted to win it so much.

“We forgot that even if you cannot win it, don’t lose it. That’s why were were caught. It’s annoying, because we put a lot of effort in, but that’s it.”

The Frenchman conceded that his side were slow out of the blocks in the first half but had hoped they would show the maturity not push forwards too much late in the game.

“We started hesitantly, not with full drive and we were 1-0 down,” he continued.

“It’s difficult because when you don’t start well it’s [hard] to get back into the game, so we did very well.

“In the second half we were on top of it but we just forgot to be cautious. They are a team that is good in transition from defence to offence and we were not cautious enough. We could have won the ball and we paid for it.

“We should have settled for a draw tonight, and we absolutely should not have lost the game [even] when we could not win it.”
