Arsene Wenger could not hide his delight after Arsenal downed Liverpool to move five points clear at the top of the table.

Santi Cazorla gave Wenger’s men the lead in the 19th minute at Emirates Stadium when he volleyed home after the Spaniard’s initial effort had hit the post.

And the in-form Aaron Ramsey put the game beyond the visitors when he rifled in his 10th goal of the season from 20 yards on the hour-mark.

“It was a convincing win against a good team and that’s what we wanted,” Wenger said. “Everybody wanted to see how we responded today and we did that in a really positive manner.

“The first goal was vital. After that, I felt that we had the opportunities to make the difference. Ramsey scored a stunning goal but we had chances before and after.

“But overall we had good focus and great dynamic in the team and it was a very convincing performance.”

Wenger also singled out Ramsey for special praise after another impressive display from the Wales international.

“At the moment what you can say is that Aaron is a young player,” said Wenger. “That means there is room for improvement and as well that he has gained in confidence in front of goal – and he used that well.”

The Gunners next face Manchester United at Old Trafford – and Wenger warned his side not to get carried away by their position at the top of the table.

“It’s positive and nice [to be top] but it’s very early in the season,” he said.

“It’s good for the confidence of the team and for the ambition as well. Hopefully it gets everybody around the team to support us and continue to do that.”
