Arsenal 2 Liverpool 2: Arsene Wenger praises the Gunners for showing "tremendous spirit" against the Reds on Wednesday
Arsene Wenger praised Arsenal for showing “tremendous spirit” after the Gunners came from behind to secure a draw with Liverpool at The Emirates.
The visitors took an early lead through Luis Suárez after abysmal defending by Arsenal, and the Reds looked to be in complete control when Jordan Henderson netted his second Premier League goal of the season.
However, Wenger’s side finally gained a stranglehold in the clash as Olivier Giroud reduced the deficit with a close-range header before Theo Walcott fired an emphatic leveller past Pepe Reina with 23 minutes remaining.
“I believe that first of all, it was a great football game where both teams really went for it and you could see that it was top level entertainment overall,” said Wenger.
“We could have lost the game or won the game by three or four goals difference. That shows that we have created many chances going forward, but we were nervous defensively.
“The two goals we have conceded today have shown that we were nervous from the start at the back, but overall we have shown great quality and tremendous spirit.”
The Gunners boss reserved special praise for Walcott after the England international scored his 11th Premier League goal this term.
“He’s absolutely moving forward,” said Wenger.
“You can see he’s a man now when he plays football. He takes responsibility, always creates danger and he played against a top full back today and that’s where you see the quality in the big games like that.”
