Arsenal 2 Napoli 0: Amazing! Fantastic! Wenger hails Özil

Arsene Wenger was gushing with praise for Mesut Özil’s display after Arsenal swept past Napoli to maintain their 100 per cent start in the Champions League.

The Germany international expertly guided home Aaron Ramsey’s cut-back to net his first goal for the club in the eighth minute at Emirates Stadium, before setting up Olivier Giroud for Arsenal’s second.

And Wenger was delighted by the 24-year-old’s performance as Arsenal moved three points clear at the top of Group F.

“In the first half he was absolutely amazing, fantastic,” Wenger told Sky Sports after the game.

“Everything was there: collective skill, individual skill, finishing. It’s what you dream to see in the stands when you come to watch football.

“And it’s good he scored. When it takes too long to score [your first goal at a new club], it’s always on your mind a little bit – so he’s gotten rid of that.”

Wenger was absolutely thrilled with his side’s overall display, especially in the first half as the north Londoners dominated the opening exchanges.

“Especially in the first half, I felt that we played at a good pace, technically, very directly – and we finished with great goals,” Wenger, whose side are top of the Premier League, continued.

“Overall, the first half was outstanding. In the second half we played more with maturity, less drive going forwards and we were a bit more cautious.”

On his side’s 100 per cent start in the Champions League, the Frenchman added: “It’s very good – you cannot start better. Of course the next two games will be deciders.”
