Steve Bould reserved special praise for Gervinho after the Ivory Coast international scored one and set up another as Arsenal battled to victory over Olympiacos on Wednesday.

After a frustrating first-half display from the Gunners, Gervinho finally made the breakthrough in the 42nd minute when his low shot beat Balázs Megyeri.

The visitors refused to be demoralised at falling behind, however, and restored parity on the stroke of half-time when Kostas Mitroglou glanced his header past Vito Mannone.

But the Gunners emerged revitalised after the break, and Lukas Podolski squeezed his shot through Megyeri’s legs in the 56th minute after being fed by Gervinho, before substitute Aaron Ramsey added gloss to the scoreline with a neat dinked finish.

Bould, filling in for Arsene Wenger on the touchline as the Gunners boss served the second of his three-game European ban, is sure there is more to come from Gervinho, who was once again deployed as a striker.

“Good players play anywhere, wherever they want to play,” Bould told Sky Sports. “He’s scoring goals so he’s playing with a lot of confidence.

“I’m certainly sure [there’s more to come from Gervinho]. I don’t think he’s played up there an awful lot and he’s improved with every game.”

Reflecting on the performance as a whole, Bould added: “They made it really tough for us. I thought they defended really well.

“We kicked the game off not too badly and then looked a little bit nervous. Maybe the result from the weekend drained us a little bit. We lost a little bit of confidence I think but overall it was a fantastic result.

“They’re technically very sound and they made it really hard. We watched tapes, we knew they were good technically.

“The big man who sat in front of the back four made it difficult – Santi [Cazorla] couldn’t get on the ball in the first half but we tried to correct that at half time and I thought we improved.”

The win leaves Arsenal top of Group B after two games on six points, two clear of Montpellier following the French champions’ 2-2 draw at Schalke.
