Aaron Ramsey admitted Arsenal were “a little nervy” before three second-half goals moved the Gunners back into fourth place and relegated Wigan.

Arsene Wenger’s men took an early lead when Lukas Podolski glanced his header home from Santi Cazorla’s corner, but Shaun Maloney’s free-kick levelled the score just before half-time.

Battling Wigan came flying out of the blocks after the break but Theo Walcott bundled home Cazorla’s low cross on the hour-mark to put the home side ahead again.

Podolski then added a third with a neat finish shortly after and Ramsey capped off the win when he drilled his shot into the roof of the net from close range.

Arsenal will qualify for next season’s Champions League if they beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday – and Ramsey stressed the importance of the win after the game.

“It was vital to get the win tonight to stay in the driving seat, winning 4-1 at home there’s no better way for the fans,” Ramsey said.

“We were a little nervy at first but the manager told us to relax and play our own game, we showed what we’re about in the second half and took care of what needed to be done.”

Ramsey’s goal was his first since October and the Wales international was thrilled to get on the score-sheet again.

“I’ve been waiting a while for it,” he continued. “We’ve got one game left and hopefully I can get another one then.

“We know what we’ve got to do against Newcastle, we’ve got to win to qualify for the Champions League.”
