Arsene Wenger says he was pleased with Jack Wilshere’s “promising” return to Arsenal first-team action at the weekend but insisted it will take time for him to find his feet again after his lengthy lay-off.

The 20-year-old midfielder started the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers after being sidelined for 14 months with ankle and knee injuries.

Midfielders Samir Nasri, Cesc Fàbregas and Alex Song all moved on to new clubs during Wilshere’s spell out injured and Wenger believes that he will need time to adapt to playing alongside his new team-mates.

“He has been out for 17 months and in the last 17 months our squad has changed a lot. Many players left,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.

“For the first game it looked quite promising. He plays in a new midfield because the last time he played it was with Nasri, Fàbregas and Song.

“Now he is in a new midfield, and it can take a little bit of time to adjust but that will come quickly.”

Wenger also warned Arsenal fans against piling too much pressure on the youngster too soon, insisting his form is dependant on the team performing as a whole.

“Jack is a great player but he will only be great if the team is great,” added the Frenchman, whose side travel to Reading in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

“There is not one player that you want to have that complete responsibility [for the whole side].

“I believe we have an interesting team, even more so now that Jack is back. So let’s express ourselves as a team and then Jack will be good.”
