Arsenal’s Wilshere hails Beckham as the ‘perfect role model’
Jack Wilshere describes David Beckham as the "perfect role model" following ex-England captain's decision to retire
Jack Wilshere has described David Beckham as the “perfect role model” following the former England captain’s decision to retire this summer.
Beckham on Thursday announced that he will call time on a glittering career at the end of the season following successful spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.
The 38-year-old, who is England’s most capped outfield player, will finish his career at newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, who he signed a five-month contract with over the winter.
And 21-year-old Arsenal midfielder has paid tribute to Beckham and admits he is a player he has always looked up to.
“For me, he is the biggest English footballer there has ever been – both on and off the pitch,” Wilshere told Arsenal Player.
“Sometimes people forget what he did on the pitch, he was a great player and he showed that for many years. For any young English midfielder, and for me growing up, he was the perfect role model.
“You can just watch him and learn – not just the way he plays but from his attitude as well, his professionalism and his love for the game. That rubs off on everyone.”
