Martin Keown has likened Arsenal signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the club’s famous partnership of Thierry Henry and Robert Pires.

Arsene Wenger managed to revamp his attack during the January transfer window despite the blow of losing Alexis Sanchez to bitter rivals Manchester United.

The Chile international moved to Old Trafford as part of the same swap deal that saw Mkhitaryan complete a move to the north London side.

Arsenal spent a club record £56m fee on Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to add more firepower to the Gunners squad for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.

Mkhitaryan made three assists on his first Arsenal start, while Aubameyang scored on his Gunners debut in a resounding 5-1 win against Everton at The Emirates last weekend.

The January signings played together for three seasons at Dortmund before Mkhitaryan moved to Manchester United in a £30m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Former Gunners defender Keown has likened Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan’s understanding to the famous Arsenal partnership between Henry and Pires.

“I originally likened them to Bergkamp and Overmars,” Keown told the Daily Mail. “They had already played together at the same club and developed an understanding.

“Against Everton, however, Mkhitaryan’s movement was more akin to Robert Pires in the way he came off the wing. In that respect, he and Aubameyang are more like Pires and Thierry Henry.

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a top-four finish and Champions League football.

The Gunners are in sixth spot in the English top flight and five points behind Chelsea in fourth spot.
