Unai Emery sends message to Arsenal supporters about Bernd Leno
Arsenal manager Unai Emery refuses to single out Bernd Leno for his display in Wednesday night's 3-1 loss to Wolves
Unai Emery refused to single out Bernd Leno despite the Arsenal goalkeeper’s poor performance in a 3-1 loss at Wolves on Wednesday night.
The Germany international has established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper over the course of the 2018-19 Premier League season ahead of Petr Cech.
However, Emery endured a night to forget at Wolves after the summer signing produced a hapless performance in the Arsenal goal.
Leno was partly at fault for Ruben Neves’ opening goal from a set-piece, although the Arsenal wall could have made a better first at stopping the free-kick.
The German shot stopper was caught stranded off his line for Matt Doherty’s goal to double the home side’s lead before he was inexplicably beaten by Diogo Jota to concede for the third time in the Premier League clash.
Leno was criticised on social media by Arsenal supporters for his performance in the Premier League clash at Wolves in the mid-week clash.
However, Emery refused to pick apart Leno’s display when asked about the German goalkeeper after Arsenal’s second successive defeat.
Asked about Leno during his post-match media conference at Molineux, Emery said:
“I don’t want to speak individually about the players,” Emery said.
“I think we need to continue together and not look at one player or the defence or attacking players like a group.
“We need to think to recover our confidence and to recover our good moments for when we were in the worst moments.
We can recover and take possibilities like we have now. Really, the last two matches we lost good options but the last three matches we are going to play in the Premier League we can and we are going to play our possibilities.”
Arsenal will take on La Liga side Valencia in the Europa League semi-final next week.
The Gunners can qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
