Chris Sutton has ruled out Arsenal finishing in the Premier League’s top four this season.

The Gunners are looking to secure a return to the Champions League following a one-season absence.

Indeed, Arsenal finished behind Liverpool in the top-four race to miss out on Europe’s premier club competition for the first time under Arsene Wenger.

The north London side spent £52m on France and Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette in the summer, while Sead Kolasinac moved on a free transfer from Schalke 04.

The Gunners squandered a 1-0 lead at Bournemouth to lose 2-1 to Eddie Howe’s side to succumb to a first defeat in five games.

The Gunners are sitting in sixth place and five points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, with Chelsea, Liverpool FC and Manchester United all involved in the top-four race.

Arsenal lost 4-2 to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round last weekend to rule out the prospect of the Gunners winning the competition for the fourth time in five seasons.

Former Chelsea striker Sutton felt Wenger made a big mistake with his team selection for the FA Cup clash given Arsenal’s bleak hopes in the Premier League.

“They’re not going to win the league,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They’re not going to get in the top four. Put out your strongest side!”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since the 2003-04 season when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira helped the Gunners to an unbeaten season.

Wenger’s side were 2-1 winners against defending Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley last term.
