Jamie Redknapp delivers blunt verdict on 25-year-old Arsenal star
The Liverpool FC legend isn't impressed with Granit Xhaka's impact at Arsenal
Jamie Redknapp has criticised Granit Xhaka’s performance in Arsenal’s 3-2 loss to Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
The Switzerland international retained his starting spot in the Arsenal team despite their 2-0 loss to defending Premier League champions Manchester City in their season opener.
Xhaka struggled to contain the Chelsea FC midfielder as the hosts eased to a 3-2 victory thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata, Pedro Rodriguez and Marcos Alonso.
Xhaka signed a new long-term deal with Arsenal in the summer following the appointment of Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger’s replacement at the Emirates Stadium.
The Swiss star has struggled to find a level of consistency since his £33m move to Arsenal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Former Liverpool FC and Spurs captain Redknapp isn’t a big fan of Xhaka after another poor display in Saturday evening’s London derby at Stamford Bridge.
“Granit Xhaka’s booking summed him up. He always gets to the tackle just too late and does not possess the quality of past Arsenal midfielders,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
Arsenal finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League place in successive seasons.
The Gunners signed Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi in the summer.
The north London side have lost their first two Premier League games under Emery.
