The Arsenal boss explains Mesut Ozil's upturn in form in the Premier League in recent weeks
Mesut Ozil is producing such brilliant form for Arsenal because the Germany midfielder is fully fit, according to Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners midfielder scored one goal and made two assists in three spectacular second-half minutes in a 5-0 win over Huddersfield Town at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
The 29-year-old has scored two goals and has made five assists in his last five Premier League games to help Arsenal beat Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Huddersfield.
Ozil produced a man of the match performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Tottenham in the north London derby at the Emirates Stadium at the start of November.
The World Cup winner has entered the final 12 months of his current Arsenal deal to throw up the possibility of Ozil leaving the north London club on a free transfer next summer.
Manchester United have been linked with a potential move to sign the German midfielder in the January transfer window or perhaps for nothing next summer.
Of course, Ozil’s critics will inevitably suggest the former Real Madrid star’s performances are no coincidence with the transfer market set to open in less than a month.
However, Arsenal boss Wenger believes Ozil’s form is a by-product of his return to full fitness after an injury-hit start to the 2017-18 Premier League season.
“The fact that he is fit, the fact I believe that you come often to games nobody has to convince you that Ozil is a great player, but he added something that people wanted to see from him as well, against Spurs and tonight, that he can fight and come back and win the ball back,” Wenger told his media conference ahead of Arsenal’s home clash against Manchester United.
“Once people see that they are behind you, everybody knows in the stadium that he is a good football player and at the moment he shows that he can fight.”
Ozil has won the FA Cup three times in the past four seasons following his £42.5m move to Arsenal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The German star has scored two goals and has made five assists in 11 appearances in the Premier League this term.
