Paul Merson predicts where Arsenal will finish this year
The Arsenal legend doesn't believe the north London side will finish in the Premier League's top four this term
Paul Merson admits he would be shocked if Arsenal finished in the Premier League top four.
The Gunners signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal from Manchester United last week after Alexis Sanchez secured a move to Old Trafford.
The north London side are in sixth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of Liverpool, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.
Arsenal missed out on a place in Europe’s premier club competition last season after the Gunners finished behind Liverpool FC in the top-four race.
Arsene Wenger has been linked with a move to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to help fill the void left by Sanchez.
However, former Gunners midfielder Merson made a gloomy prediction about Arsenal’s hopes of overhauling Chelsea or Liverpool FC in the top-four race.
“If you ask me are they going to get in the top four, I’d be shocked,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports on Thursday night.
“I can see one or two of them Bournemouth results again.”
Arsenal booked their place in the League Cup final mid-week after a 2-1 victory over defending Premier League champions Chelsea at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
The Gunners have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons but Arsenal lost 4-2 to Nottingham Forest in the third round this term to deny the north London side one route to silverware.
