Stephan Lichtsteiner sends message to Arsenal supporters about Unai Emery
The Arsenal signing issues his backing for Gunners boss Unai Emery
Stephan Lichtsteiner believes new Arsenal manager Unai Emery can help to improve him as a player.
The Gunners completed a deal for the 34-year-old defender on Tuesday evening after his contract expired at Serie A champions Juventus.
Lichtsteiner has become the first signing of the summer transfer window following Emery’s appointment as Arsene Wenger’s successor last month.
The experienced Switzerland international will be tasked with helping Emery to improve Arsenal’s leaky defence ahead of the 2018-19 season.
Lichtsteiner won seven Serie A titles, the Coppa Italia four times and three Italian Super Cups during a seven-season spell at Juventus.
His winning mentality will also be a valuable commodity to Emery as the Spanish head coach looks to halt the north London side’s alarming regression.
The new Arsenal signing is confident that Emery can improve the Swiss full-back and is backing the former Paris Saint-Germain to guide the Gunners to silverware.
“He’s a very good coach who’s won a lot of titles, especially the Europa League that we play in this year,” Lichtsteiner told Arsenal’s website.
“He’s a coach who knows what he wants and a coach who also progresses the players, and also old players like me. You never stop learning and this is very important. I’m really positive that we will do great things.”
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a spot in the Champions League.
The Gunners lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley back in February.
Arsenal haven’t finished in the top four since 2015-16.
