Charlie Nicholas makes Arsenal prediction about Unai Emery
Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas says Unai Emery could be in trouble if he persists with his current tactics
Charlie Nicholas believes Unai Emery won’t be given much more time at Arsenal if the Spanish head coach persists with his current philosophy.
The Gunners manager wants his Arsenal defenders to play out from the back but the north London side have already conceded a number of sloppy goals this term.
Arsenal centre-halves Sokratis Papastathopoulos and David Luiz made errors in the 2-2 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road last weekend.
Emery’s side conceded eight times in their opening five games in the Premier League ahead of their home clash against Aston Villa.
The north London side have made some progress since Emery took over the reins from Arsene Wenger in 2018 but the former Paris Saint-Germain boss has failed to resolve their defensive issues.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes that Emery could be facing the sack if the Spaniard persists with his current philosophy at the north London club.
“The manager is saying ‘it’s my philosophy, I’ll live or die by it’,” Nicholas said on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday.
“Well you’re going to die sooner than you think because they will let you down. They are not good enough for it.
“The simplicity of this is that you’re 2-0 up and they’re cruising and the keeper [should say] ‘get out the way, get up there, you get up there, I’m launching it 50-60 yards’.
“The game finishes 2-0, Arsenal have been bland and boring and you walk away with three points and you pat yourself on the back.”
Emery led Arsenal to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
The Gunners lost 4-1 to Chelsea FC in the Europa League final in Baku last term to miss out on an alternative route into the Champions League.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
