Alan Smith doesn’t believe Unai Emery is the “brave and bold” appointment Arsenal supporters were promised as the Gunners prepare to announce Spaniard as their new manager.

The north London side are thought to be ready to hand Emery the reins of the north London club and Sky Sports are reporting that the deal will be confirmed later this week.

The 46-year-old stood down as Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2017-18 season despite leading the French side to the Ligue 1 title ahead of Monaco and Lyon.

Emery won successive Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue trophies during his two seasons at PSG after he replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the hot seat at the Parc des Princes.

Former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta was thought to be leading the race to win the Gunners role but Emery is now on the brink of succeeding Arsene Wenger at The Emirates.

However, ex-Arsenal striker Smith isn’t inspired by reports Emery will become the next Gunners manager.

“They’ve gone for the experienced option rather than the left-field,” Smith told Sky Sports.

“Obviously Mikel Arteta might not have wanted it in the end, but Ivan Gazidis spoke initially about wanting to make a bold and brave appointment.

“I wouldn’t describe Emery as that. It’s not a safe one.

“Nothing is safe in this game but if you look at his track record with Valencia and Sevilla, particularly, on a limited budget competing against the big boys in Spain, he did exceptionally well.

“He’s clearly a coach of great ability. I know they didn’t want a manager who would bring in a huge backroom staff and want to do things entirely they way.

“They’ve got a top manager there is no doubt about that and Arsenal fans should be excited about it.”

Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table to miss out on Champions League spots in successive seasons.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final.
