The Arsenal legend slams Granit Xhaka's poor performances at the Emirates Stadium
Granit Xhaka has let down Arsene Wenger this season, according to Arsenal legend Martin Keown.
The Gunners signed the Switzerland international in a £33m deal from Borussia Monchengladbach last term.
Arsenal were linked with a move to sign France international N’Golo Kante from Leicester City before the midfielder moved to Chelsea FC.
Xhaka has struggled to adapt to the Premier League at Arsenal despite being one of Monchengladbach’s best players.
Indeed, the 23-year-old has regularly cost Arsenal goals with his bad positional sense and poor passing.
A number of Arsenal legends have called on Wenger to sign a proven holding midfielder to replace Xhaka and protect the back four.
Former Gunners centre-half Keown believes Xhaka isn’t good enough for the north London club.
“You defend as a team, there has to be that psyche,” Keown told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Ian Rush used to defend from the front and you need that. It’s in the DNA and that doesn’t seem to be there with Arsenal now.
“Is Xhaka doing what Fernandinho does? No. He gives the ball away, makes rash challenges, gets booked too often.
“He’s an ever-present so Wenger trusts him but I feel he’s let him down this season.”
Keown added: “Is Xhaka really good enough for Arsenal at this level?”
Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League leaders Manchester City at The Emirates on Thursday night.
Four days earlier, the Gunners suffered a 3-0 defeat by the Citizens in the League Cup final last weekend.
The north London side finished off a disastrous week with a 2-1 loss at Brighton.
