Insider questions whether 26-year-old will secure Arsenal move
Gabriele Marcotti believes Riyad Mahrez's chance to move Arsenal or a big team could have already gone...
Gabriele Marcotti has suggested that Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez has missed out on the chance to secure a move to a big club.
The Algeria international was reported to have handed in a transfer request last week in an attempt to force through a summer transfer away from Leicester.
Mahrez was a key part of Claudio Ranieri’s side that won the Premier League title against the odds in the 2015-16 season.
Indeed, the 26-year-old scored 17 times and made 11 assists in 37 appearances throughout Leicester’s title-winning campaign to prompt talk of a big-money move to Arsenal or Barcelona.
Mahrez won the 2016 PFA player of the year ahead of N’Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy after the midfielder’s impressive debut campaign in the Premier League.
Times journalist Marcotti suggested that Mahrez may have missed out on a lucrative move to one of Europe’s superpowers.
“It terms of a big money move, it is [too late],” Marcotti told ESPN FC.
“He and Vardy stayed on board. Claudio Ranieri convinced them to have a Champions League season together.
“I think he is entitled to move on. I don’t think it will be the same level as last summer.”
Leicester finished in 12th place in the Premier League table after a disappointing defence of their top-flight crown.
