Arsenal and Liverpool FC are unlikely to sign AS Monaco forward Thomas Lemar in the January transfer window, according to reporter Bryan Swanson.

The France international was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer transfer window and Lemar was the subject of a £92m offer from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

However, the 22-year-old turned down a move to the north London club amid reports that suggested the Frenchman preferred a move to Liverpool FC.

The Reds sold their prized asset Philippe Coutinho in an £142 deal to La Liga leaders Barcelona at the weekend to leave a void in Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead of the second half of the season.

Lemar would be a natural replacement for Coutinho but Liverpool FC could be forced to pay over the odds for the talented France attacker given Monaco will be aware of the Reds’ inflated transfer budget.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are lining up potential replacements for Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez given the pair can leave the Gunners on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.

Sky Sports News reporter Swanson provided the latest update on Monaco forward Lemar in the January transfer window.

“Lots of Liverpool and Arsenal supporters have been asking whether Thomas Lemar will be sold in this window,” Swanson told Sky Sports News on Monday.

“Monaco’s position is that they don’t intend to sell any of their top players this month.

“The club’s vice-president told us a few months ago that there was a fair chance Lemar would leave but only in the summer.

“We’ve had nothing yet to suggest that their transfer strategy has changed. The expectation still remains that Lemar will remain in Monaco beyond this month’s deadline.”
