Martin Keown: It’s clear this Arsenal issue has affected results
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown criticses the lack of leadership at The Emirates
Martin Keown believes Arsene Wenger’s failure to shed light on his future has affected Arsenal’s results in recent weeks.
The Gunners boss has failed to indicate whether he will sign a contract extension at the north London club with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
Arsenal have struggled in the Premier League after three successive defeats on the road following losses to Premier League leaders, top-four rivals Liverpool and West Brom.
The north London side crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the seventh successive season after 10-2 aggregate loss to Bundesliga holders Bayern Munich.
Arsenal will host third-placed Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Gunners look to close the gap on the top four.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about Wenger’s current situation at Arsenal, the club’s former defender Keown urged the manager to end uncertainty surrounding his future.
“Not announcing it is a bit of an issue. It’s about creating a bit of certainty for the players,” Keown said.
“There seems to be a lack of leadership in this situation, especially with the story that Arsene has told the club that he wants to stay for another two years.
“It’s affected the group. That has been clear from recent results. An announcement is now needed.
“He may have wanted to tell the players before revealing it to the public. The fact the players have been away may be holding it back. I can think of no other reason.”
