Mathieu Flamini has refused to rule out a return to Marseille in the future after sealing a move back to Arsenal in August.

The 29-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Gunners after joining the north London side on a free transfer following his release from AC Milan.

Flamini was originally lured to The Emirates from Marseille by Arsene Wenger in 2004 before the France international decided to move to Serie A just over four years later.

And the tenacious midfielder, who impressed on his second Arsenal debut in a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, hinted at a possible return to l’OM in the future.

“You should never say never,” said Flamini. “I did my apprenticeship there. Of course it’s the club of my heart.

“I’ve always stayed close to it, because I’m in contact with Jose Anigo, someone who knows me very well. But there’s never been anything concrete in terms of a potential return up to now.

“Having said that, I’ve got some good years still ahead of me.”

Earlier this week, Flamini set his sights on helping the Gunners end their eight-year trophy drought.

“It’s an important season for me and Arsenal. Our ambitions are clear, as the arrival of Mesut Ozil proved,” Flamini is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

“[We want] to fight for the title and compete in the Champions League. We want to win trophies. The club has waited for them for too long.

“We have the means to compete for the title, even if we are outsiders, not favourites, like in 2007-08.

“That is my motivation. I want to write another beautiful story with Arsenal.”
