Mikel Arteta has revealed his admiration for Paris Saint-Germain’s David Beckham as the Arsenal midfielder looks to emulate the former England captain.

The Spain international trained with Beckham in the winter before the former Manchester United winger completed a move to PSG on the final day of the transfer window.

Beckham evolved from a right-sided winger into a central midfielder as his career progressed, and Arteta is impressed by the PSG star’s appetite for the game and ability to adapt.

“Beckham is tremendous,” Arteta told the London Evening Standard. “The changes he made, in different countries and different cultures as well, that is tiring, moving your family from one side to the other.

“When people criticised him when he played for Paris St-Germain against Barcelona, I could not believe it.

“What he is doing is absolutely fantastic. He trained with us in January and to see how professional he is was unbelievable.

“I talked to him and everybody who talks about him says the same. He wants to get better and better.”

Arteta, who played for Barcelona and PSG in the early stages of his career, started as a left winger before being asked to adopt a deep-lying midfield role by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Despite the increased defensive duties, the former Toffees midfielder insists he relishes his current role ahead of Arsenal’s crunch top-four clash against Everton on Tuesday.

“Sometimes when I watch old videos from when I was at Everton, I see I was playing left wing, right wing and the way I have to play now is very different,’ he added.

“But when I started my career at Barcelona and Paris St-Germain, I used to play there with a lot of creative players in front of me and I enjoyed a different role. You have a lot of responsibility there but I enjoy it now.

“Sometimes people say to me, ‘Mikel, you can go forward, score goals and be in the headlines,’ but we have a lot of good players who can do that already.

“Sometimes you need to know that if you can help in another position and make the rest better, that is the best thing to do.”
