Nacho Monreal believes moving to Arsenal has helped his chances of securing a starting spot in the Spain first-team.

The left-back has scored one goal in 24 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners following a £8.3m move to the north London side from Malaga in the January transfer window.

Monreal, who has 15 caps for Spain, has struggled to dislodge Arsenal’s first-choice left-back Kieran Gibbs since moving to the Gunners, as well as contending with a series of injury setbacks.

But the 27-year-old full-back believes he has been forced to improve due to the “jump in quality” in the Premier League which can only aid his chances of play for Spain.

“I think so yes. I was at Malaga for 18 months and I grew a lot as a player,” Monreal told Fifa’s website.

“The move to the Premier League is a jump in quality and a jump forward. I think being part of a team like Arsenal helps.”

Monreal conceded he is facing a battle with Jordi Alba to become Spain’s number one left-back as the former Malaga man also tries to impress Arsene Wenger at The Emirates.

“I’d like that. I’m aware that it’s not going to be easy, also partly because I’m not getting as many minutes as I would like with Arsenal,” Monreal added.

“I’m going to continue fighting and working hard because I really want to be at the World Cup.”
