Paul Merson: Why Arsenal fans should be worried about Alexis Sanchez now
Paul Merson admits that he is worried about Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal after Chile missed out on a World Cup spot
Paul Merson believes that Alexis Sanchez may struggle to be motivated to perform for Arsenal for the rest of the season after Chile missed out on a place in the World Cup.
The 28-year-old suffered the bitter disappointment of seeing his national team miss out on a spot in next summer’s World Cup in Russia during the international break.
Sanchez’s future has already been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks, with the forward’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The attacker was heavily linked with a transfer away from Arsenal in the summer window, with Manchester City touted as a possible destination for the forward.
And former Arsenal star Merson believes that Sanchez could end up missing some key motivation now that Chile will not be competing next summer.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Alexis Sanchez missing out on the World Cup with Chile is a worry for Arsenal.
“What’s he playing for now for the rest of the season? He’s their star player, his contract is up and he doesn’t want to stay.
“Gunners fans should be worried because he will be on such a downer.”
Sanchez will be hoping to help Arsenal challenge for the Premier League title this season after they ended up fifth in the table and missed out on Champions League qualification last term.
The north London side have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign when they were still playing their home games at Highbury.
