Paul Merson believes that Brendan Rodgers should jump at the chance to take over as the next Arsenal manager.

The Gunners are currently on the lookout for a new boss after having sacked Unai Emery at the end of last month.

Freddie Ljungberg has been brought in as interim manager at The Emirates but the north London side are now on the lookout for a permanent replacement for Emery.

Leicester City boss Rodgers has been touted as one of the leading candidates to take over at The Emirates as Arsenal continue their hunt for a new manager.

Former Arsenal star Merson feels that Rodgers would be the right man to reverse the Gunners’ ailing fortunes, and he says he should be looking at the long-term picture.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “He [Rodgers] is happy and Leicester are the best team in the league at the moment.

“Do not look at the next six months though, you have to look at the all-round picture and the next five years.

“This [Arsenal] is a big, big football club. He has managed Liverpool, but Arsenal are one of the top 10 clubs in Europe and in my opinion, I think he does [take the job].

“Do not let the points gap between them now cloud your judgement.”

Arsenal will return to Premier League action on Monday night when they travel to West Ham United in the English top flight.

The north London side are currently off the pace in the race for Champions League qualification as they bid to try and book their place in Europe’s elite club competition for next season.
