Carl Jenkinson has vowed to keep working hard behind the scenes to try and force his way into Unai Emery’s first-team plans at Arsenal.

The 26-year-old came off the bench to play for the final half-hour of Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Cardiff City in the Premier League at The Emirates on Tuesday night.

His appearance was his first for Arsenal in the Premier League appearance since November 2016 – a wait of 801 days – and the defender has insisted that he is now working to try and prove himself to the new man in charge at The Emirates.

Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website after the game, Jenkinson said: “It’s never easy [to come on as a substitute] as a defender, but I was given the license to get forward and join the attack,” he said.

“We were pushing to win the game so my job was to get forward and try to cause problems, and if I wasn’t getting on the ball, my job was to open up space for other players.

“I did my best to do that, I was running up and down and I did my best to get involved and cause problems. I think I did that so I’m happy. It was great to come on and play a part in a win.”

He continued: “Now I’ve got to push on. I’ve got to keep working. That’s what I do best. I’m pushing and I’m pushing.

“We’ve got top lads in the squad and whoever plays is going to do a job, but for personal pride of course I want to be in the team.

“I’m training as hard as I can

The right-back will be hoping to be involved for Arsenal when the Gunners travel to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Jenkinson has made five appearances in the cup competitions for the north London side so far this season and he will be hoping to force himself into Emery’s plans for the second part of the campaign.

Arsenal are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table as they seek a top-four finish and Champions League qualification in Emery’s first season in charge at the club.
