Arsene Wenger has hinted that Mathieu Debuchy could be in line to earn a spot back in the first team at Arsenal this season.
The 32-year-old right-back lost his place in the first team to Hector Bellerin after a lengthy lay-off with an injury.
The defender has been linked with a move away from The Emirates in recent transfer windows but has ended up staying at the club.
Debuchy made his first start of the season for the north London side when Arsenal took on Red Star Belgrade last month and followed that display up with another 90-minute showing against Norwich City in the League Cup last week.
And Arsenal boss Wenger has hinted that Debuchy could now be set to hold down a regular spot in the first team with the Gunners.
Wenger is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard: “We are all very pleased for him here because he has gone through some very difficult moments with setbacks.
“The fact that he got through 120 minutes the other night is a huge boost for him. He needs to recover now but from now on, he’ll be a candidate to fight for the team places again.
“Mathieu is absolutely strong and determined as well. He’s a quiet character but a very strong one. I must say he’s 100 per cent a professional player. Everybody in the medical department just says he’s exceptional.”
Debuchy will be hoping to be involved when Arsenal return to Europa League action on Thursday night with a home clash against Red Star Belgrade at The Emirates.
Arsenal then turn their attentions towards a big weekend of Premier League football, with the Gunners set to take on leaders Manchester City in the top flight at The Etihad on Sunday.
