Frank Lampard opens up about Olivier Giroud at Arsenal
Frank Lampard heaps praise on Olivier Giroud for the important role he plays at Arsenal
Frank Lampard has heaped praise on Olivier Giroud for the important role he plays at Arsenal.
The French striker has regularly delivered when called upon by the north London side even if he has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team at The Emirates.
Following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon in the summer transfer window, Giroud’s playing time has been more restricted.
Indeed, the striker has not yet started in the Premier League for the Gunners this season, despite making nine appearances from the bench.
Giroud has scored three goals in all competitions for Arsenal so far this season and he’ll be hoping to hold down more of a regular spot in the first team as the season goes on.
And Chelsea legend Lampard has delivered his honest verdict on the 31-year-old forward.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Lampard said: “Just look at the goal he scored in the last round of the Europa League against Red Star Belgrade, who they face again at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.
“Importantly, he gives them a different option to the other attacking players they’ve got. It is a great asset to have in your squad.
“He can be a presence, hold the ball up and bring others into play, he can help Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and so on.
“Some people could criticise him for staying and deciding not to be the main man elsewhere but I don’t see it that way. He knows what he gives the club, I think he feels the club, too. He plays with passion.
“I think Arsenal fans appreciate what he does and his goals record is better than what you might expect – there are a lot of impact goals, too.”
Arsenal are currently preparing for their home game against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The north London side, who won the FA Cup last season, are currently fifth in the Premier League table and nine points behind leaders Manchester City after 10 games of the new campaign.
