Henrikh Mkhitaryan has told his Arsenal team-mates that their priority must be to break into the Champions League places next season.

The Gunners ended up in a disappointing sixth place in the Premier League table this season as they missed out on Champions League qualification for the second season running under Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal’s poor form this term prompted the Wenger to step down as manager at the end of the campaign after almost 22 years at the helm at The Emirates.

The north London club have moved quickly to appoint Wenger’s successor, bringing in Unai Emery as the club’s new manager this week.

Emery has been tasked with steering Arsenal back up the Premier League table as the Gunners look to try and challenge for the Premier League title and break back into the top four in the coming years.

And Mkhitaryan, who signed for Arsenal from Manchester United in the January transfer window, believes that the north London club’s focus must be to try and break back into the Champions League spots next season under their new manager.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Mkhitaryan said: “Our priority (last season) was qualification for Champions League, but unfortunately we didn’t manage that

“We wanted to do it and we fought for it, but everything can happen in football, so we should focus on next season and return to the Champions League in two years.”

Arsenal have not won the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
