Gilberto Silva has backed Arsenal’s decision to spend a club-record fee on Alexandre Lacazette.

The Gunners signed the France international in a £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon last month following months of speculation linking the centre-forward with a move to the Premier League.

The Arsenal record signing made an impressive start to his Premier League career with a second-minute goal in the north London side’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Leicester City in their season opener.

The 26-year-old guided a header past Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to underline his reputation as one of Europe’s most-precise finishers.

Lacazette found the back of the net at the Britannia Stadium last weekend with a clinical finish before the striker’s effort was ruled out for offside.

The summer signing was replaced later in the second half as the Gunners suffered a 1-0 loss to Stoke City to succumb to their first Premier League defeat of the 2017-18 campaign.

Former Arsenal midfielder Silva is confident that Lacazette will be a great addition to Arsene Wenger’s team.

“Lacazette has started well in my opinion,” said Silva, speaking exclusively to 888sport. “Arsenal spent big money on him, so there were always going to be big expectations.

“I’m sure he is getting the support of his team-mates and Arsene Wenger but he also needs the fans to support him.

“If he gets that support and feels embraced, he thinks ‘okay, I am being embraced, now I must give something back’. He will do well for the club.”

Arsenal have also signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 this summer.

The Gunners will make the daunting trip to Anfield in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
