Martin Keown has revealed that Arsene Wenger is very protective of his Arsenal players.

The Gunners boss is already coming under pressure after three games of the 2017-18 Premier League season.

Arsenal lost 1-0 to Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium earlier this month following Jese Rodriguez’s second-half winner.

The north London suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat by title rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Gunners are currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table to leave Arsenal six points behind leaders Manchester United.

Arsenal sold England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in a £40m deal to Liverpool on Thursday’s transfer deadline day.

Keown revealed an interesting story from when the retired defender was drafted into the Arsenal coaching staff to help coach the north London side’s defence.

Former Arsenal defender Keown suggested that Wenger remains very protective of his players.

“In 2006, I was asked to come and work at the club. I helped out Pat Rice when they did defending sessions,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“There was one player who was making positional mistakes that were costing the team goals.

“I wanted to flag up these mistakes to the player by showing him the footage but Wenger did not want him to see it.

“In Wenger’s view, if a player sees himself making mistakes the problem becomes even bigger his mind.

“That can be the case when you are discussing a technical aspect of a player’s game, such as passing.

“But when the problem is positional and concerns a player’s body shape or angle of approach, it is worth going into detail and showing the player where he is going wrong.

“I felt that by not addressing the situation, it would affect the player’s ability in the long term.”

Keown added: “I don’t know whether things have changed now but Wenger is very protective of his players. He treats them like his sons.

“But if players keep making the same mistakes, that will cost the team.”

Arsenal have signed Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette in a £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon last month.

The Gunners have also brought in Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 on a free transfer.

Arsenal have already conceded eight goals in their opening three Premier League games to heap pressure on Wenger.
