Pundit delivers blunt verdict on Arsenal defender: He used to be one of the best
Kevin Kilbane is critical of Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin's lack of progress in recent seasons
Hector Bellerin has gone from one of the Premier League’s best full-backs to struggling to get into the Arsenal team, Kevin Kilbane has claimed.
The Gunners suffered a 4-0 loss to title rivals Liverpool in the Premier League before the international break to heap pressure on the Arsenal team.
Bellerin was directly responsible for Mohamed Salah’s goal after the Arsenal defender lost possession inside Liverpool’s half with only Petr Cech behind the defender.
The Spain international was linked with a potential move to Barcelona during the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.
Bellerin struggled to replicate his excellent performances in his opening two seasons in the Arsenal first-team throughout the 2016-17 campaign.
His start to the new campaign will be a concern for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal supporters given their current defensive problems.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Kilbane highlighted Bellerin’s regression over the past 12 months.
“Hector Bellerin has gone from being one of the best right-backs in football to almost now thinking he’s not good enough to get in the Arsenal side,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“It’s incredible the decline in Bellerin.”
Arsenal have already conceded eight goals in their opening three Premier League games.
Bellerin moved to the Gunners from Barcelona in 2011 after coming through the ranks at the Catalan side.
