Martin Keown explains why Arsenal haven’t won Premier League title since 2004

The Arsenal legend believes the Gunners haven't shown the defensive side of the game enough respect since their last title win in 2003-04

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004 because of a lack of respect for the defensive side of the game, Martin Keown has claimed.

The Gunners were Manchester United’s biggest challengers for the Premier League title during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Indeed, Wenger led the north London side to three Premier League titles during his initial eight seasons in charge at Highbury.

Arsenal became the first Premier League team to win the title without losing a game in 2003-04 thanks to Thierry Henry’s goals and Patrick Vieira’s leadership.

Wenger hasn’t come close to leading the Gunners to title glory since 2004 even though Arsenal finished in second place in 2016.

Former Gunners defender Keown claimed that the north London side’s failure to improve their defensive performances has cost them a shot at the title.

“Arsene Wenger has not won a Premier League title since 2004,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“His Arsenal teams since have been committed to attacking but have not respected the defensive side of the game enough.

“I’ve said it time and again — the team which strikes the best balance will win the title.”

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League title last term to miss out on a Champions League spot.

The Gunners won their third FA Cup crown in four seasons last May thanks to a 2-1 win against Chelsea.
