Martin Keown sends message to Arsenal fans about Per Mertesacker
Martin Keown lavishes praise on Per Mertesacker following his brilliant form for Arsenal in the FA Cup final
Martin Keown hailed Per Mertesacker as Arsenal’s “lion” in defence after the Gunners beat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
The veteran German was drafted into the line-up by Arsene Wenger after the Gunners suffered something of an injury crisis heading into the game.
Without most of their central defenders, Mertesacker started in a back three for Wenger’s men and produced a valiant display to help keep Chelsea at bay.
Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey wrapped up the victory for Wenger’s men as Arsenal won the FA Cup for the third time in four years.
And former Arsenal defender Keown had nothing but praise for Mertesacker after his strong display for the Gunners at Wembley.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Keown said: “Mertesacker was unbelievable. To come in after 37 minutes this season…
“He was a lion at the back in the makeshift back three.”
Prior to Saturday’s clash, Mertesacker had only played 37 minutes of first-team football this season due to a knee injury suffered last summer.
