Arsene Wenger sends direct message to Arsenal fans about Alex Iwobi
Arsene Wenger explains the areas in which he thinks Alex Iwobi can improve for Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has challenged Alex Iwobi to improve his game in the final third for Arsenal.
The 21-year-old midfielder impressed as he played 80 minutes of Arsenal’s goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League last weekend.
However, the youngster has found his first-team opportunities to be largely few and far between so far this season, having only started two games for the north London side.
Wenger says that he is fully expecting Iwobi to develop into a “top class” player at The Emirates but feels that the Nigeria international will have to step up the attacking aspect of his game.
Speaking at a news conference at London Colney on Thursday, Wenger said: “I like the fact that he can play in tight areas, that he turns the game forwards, that he’s very mobile.
“We forget sometimes that Alex is still a very young player and that there’s a lot more to come from him. There must be a lot more to come from him because he has more personality in the game now.
“We expect him to be more efficient in the final third offensively, because you feel there are goals in there and assists too. They have to come out. Add that to the fact that he allows the team to play very well and he will be a top-class player.”
Arsenal are currently gearing up for their Premier League clash against West Brom at The Emirates on Monday night.
The north London side have only won two of their opening five Premier League games as they look for a victory to try and climb the top flight table and mount a serious title challenge.
Wenger’s men finished fifth last season as they missed out on Champions League qualification, and they have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
