Arsenal urged to sign top 25-year-old attacker

Steve Nicol believes Arsenal should consider a big-money transfer swoop to sign James Rodriguez this summer

Steve Nicol has urged Arsenal to make a transfer bid to try and bring James Rodriguez to The Emirates this summer.

Arsenal have been linked with a host of players in recent days as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.

However, despite all of the speculation, the Gunners have thus far only completed the signing of left-back Sead Kolasinac from Schalke on a free transfer.

Arsenal are thought to be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements this summer, with the futures of both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil still unclear.

Real Madrid star Rodriguez has been linked with a move away from The Bernabeu in recent weeks due to his lack of playing time last season.

And former Liverpool star Nicol reckons Rodriguez would be the perfect fit for Arsenal – alongside Sanchez and Ozil.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol said: “They don’t need a playmaker but would he make them better?

“If he’s got Sanchez up front, somebody like Rodriguez is going to be able play with Sanchez, and create stuff.

“If Arsenal get rid of Sanchez and sign Rodriguez, who’s he going to play with? Giroud?

“Why can’t you have James, Ozil and Sanchez as your three-pronged attack and fill in behind it and keep it strong?

“We’ve been talking about trying to solidify the middle of the park, why not just go and do that?

“Three superstars up front, on you go.”

Arsenal are preparing for a season without Champions League football next term after Wenger’s side ended up fifth in the Premier League table.

The Gunners did end the season on a high, however, by beating Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final last month.
