Arsenal join Chelsea in race to sign top 26-year-old – report
Arsenal are now in the race to try and sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, say reports

Arsenal have joined Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool in the race to sign defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, according to reports.
The Sun is reporting that the Gunners are interested in bringing the 26-year-old Netherlands international to The Emirates as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of next season.
Liverpool looked on course to sign the defender last month but the Reds were forced to pull the plug on that attempt after they issued a statement apologising to Southampton for the way they conducted negotiations.
The story says Arsenal have “shown interest” in signing Van Dijk this summer but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to convince the defender to move to The Emirates without Champions League football next season.
The same story says both Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in signing the player, but that Southampton do not want to sell the highly-rated defender this summer.
Arsenal completed their second signing of the summer last week when they tied up a deal to bring Alexandre Lacazette to the club from Lyon.
