Lee Dixon names who he wants to be next Arsenal manager
Lee Dixon explains why he wants to see Patrick Vieira appointed as the next Arsenal manager
Lee Dixon has revealed that he is keen to see Patrick Vieira appointed as Arsenal’s new manager.
The Gunners are currently on the lookout for a new head coach after having opted to sack Unai Emery last week following a poor start to the new season.
Freddie Ljungberg has assumed temporary charge at The Emirates after having been brought in as Emery’s successor on an interim basis.
The north London side played out a 2-2 draw with Norwich City in their opener on Sunday and will host Brighton and Hove Albion in their next game on Thursday night.
Former Arsenal midfielder Vieira has been touted as a possible candidate to take over at The Emirates, and ex-defender Dixon has now explained why he thinks that he’d be a great choice for the Gunners.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Dixon said: “I want the club to go, ‘Right, I’ll tell you what it’s going to take three or four years, Patrick Vieira, bring your people in’.
“Make it old Arsenal in that respect, that’s not so I get a job because I’m not a coach!
“But the point is the club is close to my heart and I want ‘The Arsenal’ to still be a part of the manager and I think [Vieira] is perfect for that.
“The experience level of not managing at that level could be a gamble but if I was the owner I’d be willing to put three or four years gamble on Patrick Vieira and go ‘Right, it doesn’t matter where we finish, for the next two years off you go’.
“Set the academy up and be ‘The Arsenal’ which is why they’re called ‘The Arsenal’ because it’s a special club.”
Arsenal are looking to claw their way back into contention for a top-four finish this season after they ended up fifth in the table last term.
They are currently well of the pace in the race for Champions League qualification as they look to seal their spot in the top four this season.
