Martin Keown reacts to Danny Welbeck’s display in Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Ostersunds
Martin Keown admits that Danny Welbeck looks like a player seriously lacking confidence after his display on Thursday night
Martin Keown admitted that Danny Welbeck looks like a player devoid of confidence after his performance in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Ostersunds in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The north London side took a big stride towards securing their place in the last 16 of Europe’s second tier club competition with a comfortable victory in central Sweden.
Nacho Monreal gave the Gunners the lead in the first half, before Sotirios Giannakopoulos’s own goal made it 2-0 before the break.
And Mesut Ozil netted in the 58th minute to help secure the victory and all but secure the Gunners’ place in the last 16 draw.
Welbeck played for 83 minutes in the absence of the injured Alexandre Lacazette and ineligible Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The striker has been working his way back to full fitness following a string of serious injuries.
And former Arsenal defender Keown admits that Welbeck has plenty of work to do when it comes to getting back to full match sharpness.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Keown said: “When a player is coming back from the injuries that he’s had… I think he just wanted to get through the game unscathed.
“I don’t like to be too critical because I know that it’s almost bone on bone. He’s had big operations on his knees and he’s lucky to be even playing.
“[But] he wasn’t quick enough in mind and in body. He’s really devoid of confidence at the moment. It was a difficult night for him.”
Arsenal will return to action next Thursday night when they take on Ostersunds in the second leg at The Emirates.
They then play Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
