David Ornstein says Shkodran Mustafi wants to stay at Arsenal and prove himself in the first team
Shkodran Mustafi wants to stay and fight for his place in the Arsenal team this season, according to BBC Sport reporter David Ornstein.
The 27-year-old’s situation at The Emirates has been something of a source of speculation in recent weeks amid suggestions that he could be offloaded by the Gunners this summer.
Mustafi was jeered by some Arsenal fans as he came on as a substitute during the Emirates Cup defeat by Lyon last weekend.
Now, BBC Sport reporter Ornstein has revealed that Arsenal are in talks with a “number” of clubs about Mustafi’s proposed exit.
However, the journalist says that the player himself wants to stay at The Emirates and fight for his place in the first team.
Posting an update on Twitter, Ornstein said: “Arsenal in talks with number of clubs over Shkodran Mustafi exit. 27yo (contract until 2021) wants to stay + prove himself.
“But #AFC want permanent or loan departure. Also hope to bolster central defence pre-deadline & retain interest in Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.”
The central defender was a regular fixture in the Arsenal team last season, scoring two goals in 31 Premier League games for Unai Emery’s side.
The north London club will begin their Premier League campaign when they take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on 11 August.
The Gunners finished fifth and without a trophy last term after they lost the Europa League final 4-1 to Chelsea FC back in May.
