Unai Emery has conceded that Arsenal are outsiders to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season.

The Spanish manager has been tasked with steering Arsenal towards Champions League qualification this season after the Gunners finished outside of the top four in their final two campaigns under Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal ended up in sixth place in the table last season and without a trophy before they brought in Emery as Wenger’s successor at The Emirates.

The north London side have made a solid if unspectacular start to life under Emery this season but they do find themselves firmly in contention for a place in the top four alongside the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea FC.

However, Emery has now conceded that he feels that Arsenal still have a lot of hard work to do if they are to be able to finish in the Champions League qualification spots this term.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro before Arsenal’s clash with Huddersfield on Saturday, Emery said: “There are teams better than us.

“Are we outsiders now for a top-four finish? Yes. That’s the reality.

“We still have to believe we can finish in the top four even while knowing it will be difficult for us.

“There’s a big difference between the top three (Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham) and us, but we are a lot closer to Chelsea and Manchester United.

“The gap to the top three is too big but the other two? The possibility to catch them is there because we are only [a few] points behind Chelsea and one point behind Manchester United.

“We still have to believe that we can do it.”

Arsenal will return to Europa League action on Thursday night when they take on BATE Borisov in the last 32.

They will not be in Premier League action again until their home clash against Southampton on 24 February.
