Olivier Giroud has warned that Arsenal must keep their best players if the Gunners are going to end their eight-year silverware drought.

Arsenal have been accused of being a selling club in recent seasons following the departures of key players, such as former captains Cesc Fàbregas and Robin van Persie.

Arsene Wenger strengthened his squad in the summer, with Giroud and Lukas Podolski among the big names arriving, but the Frenchman’s new-look side have struggled.

And Giroud believes the key to mounting a successful title challenge will be keeping their key men and slowly adding more quality over future transfer windows.

“First you need to keep your best players, that’s so important. After that, maybe you need more money,” Giroud told Sky Sports.

“But Manchester United every year buy one or two players. They manage to keep their best players, I think that’s the main thing to do.”

Giroud has scored nine goals in 27 Premier League appearances after moving to The Emirates from Montpellier in a £9.6m deal last summer.

The France international revealed Bayern Munich were also interested in his services, but Giroud wanted to join a club with a rich history of French strikers.

“Munich were not ready to take a decision. I was really happy to sign for Arsenal,” he added.

“Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord, Emmanuel Petit – there have been a lot of French players, so that’s why I supported this team.”
