Jens Lehmann feels Arsenal paid “too much” to sign Mesut Özil from Real Madrid this summer.

The Gunners splashed a club-record £42.5m to bring the 24-year-old Germany international to north London following Gareth Bale’s world-record move to Real Madrid from Tottenham.

Özil had a hand in all three goals as Arsenal moved top of the table thanks to a 3-1 win over Stoke City on Sunday.

But former Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann believes the north London club paid over the odds to land the playmaker.

“In all honesty, Arsenal paid too much for Mesut Özil, but that’s because Gareth Bale went to Real Madrid for so much more money. Nobody is worth that much,” Lehmann told Spox.

“The Ozil deal was much better. I don’t see a €50m difference between the two players. That’s how that market works when a club like Real Madrid loses the plot.

“Arsenal are profiting from Özil’s level of game and performance and his success is not a surprise to me. Wenger did not fail and, given time, he demonstrated a great success in the market.”
