Gary Neville was quick to criticise Granit Xhaka for failing to learn from his past mistakes after the Arsenal midfielder conceded a first-half penalty in the 2-2 draw in the north London derby on Sunday.

The Switzerland international succumbed to a moment of madness when Xhaka made a rash challenge in the penalty area to bring down Tottenham striker Son Heung-min.

The Arsenal midfielder showed a lack of composure to completely clean out the South Korea international and concede a 39th-minute penalty.

Tottenham striker Harry kane made no mistake from the penalty spot to extend Spurs’ lead to 2-0 after Christian Eriksen’s first-half opener.

Former Manchester United defender Neville didn’t hold back in his assessment of Xhaka’s poorly-timed challenge at The Emirates on Sunday.

“It was madness from Xhaka,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“An experienced player who never becomes experienced. We’ve seen him do the same thing week in, week out and season in, season out. He doesn’t seem to learn.”

Neville added: “I don’t think I’ve ever watched Xhaka where he’s not made at least 50 fouls a half.”

Eriksen broke the deadlock in the first half when the Denmark international reacted quickest to Bernd Leno’s poor save from Erik Lamela’s shot.

Kane doubled Tottenham’s lead from the penalty spot before Alexandre Lacazette scored a superb solo goal to halve the deficit before half-time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled with his third goal of the season in the second half to rescue a point for the hosts.

Xhaka has been booked 26 times and sent off three times since his move to Arsenal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.

The Swiss midfielder has been regularly criticised for his rash style of play in the middle of the park since his move to the Premier League from Bundesliga.
